Improved NAICS Categorization

This release includes a broad pass at improving naics_code assignment accuracy and precision across the dataset. In total, 814,960 POIs have a different naics_code compared to the September release - these changes reflect a mix of more precise classification where the data supports it, reductions of overly broad 3- or 5-digit codes to their proper 6-digit equivalents, and general cleanup where category assignments didn't accurately reflect the underlying location.

Of those, roughly 260k POIs were promoted from a 5-digit to a 6-digit naics_code, bringing them in line with the full specificity the NAICS hierarchy supports. The remaining changes are a mix of POIs that became longer (more precise), shorter (pulled back to a more appropriate level of specificity), or shifted to a different code altogether at the same digit length:

As always, naics_code reflects our best classification of what a location is - not just the brand it carries - so some of these changes may affect how POIs fall into category-based filters or analyses. 🗂️

Places Growth

This month, SG Places totals 77,461,837 POIs (including POIs with/without geometry, closed POIs, and parking lots) - a net increase of 170,070. The increase comes from our source updates, new brands, and targeted coverage work. Country standouts & top NAICS gains:

Brand Openings and Closings

• We rely on POI metadata to track store openings and closings, and we are especially interested in understanding open/close dates for branded POIs. It can take more than a month to infer open/close dates, so we report brand open/close metrics on a one month delay.
• In this release, we flagged 2,339 brands with at least one store closure in August 2026 and 2,491 brands with at least one store opening in August 2026. Learn more about our open/close columns here.

Drops ⬇️

• We are ingesting many sources and due to source changes and processing changes, Placekeys do drop over time. In this release, we dropped 461,160 Placekeys (47,995 branded and 413,165 non-branded) due to targeted sourcing improvements.
