Places Summary Statistics

Gain access to SafeGraph’s Places Summary Statistics, a collection of stats summarizing their most recent and relevant statistics. See metrics from the latest release, from the last 12 months, place counts and fill rates, brand info counts and fill rates, top ten brands by country, and more!


Metrics from Latest Release

The statistics presented below are based on the June 2021 Places Release

Note: the grand total of distinct brand names will be inflated, due to double counting brands that exist across multiple countries. See Brand Info Counts and Fill Rates to get the current, unique brand name metrics.

Metrics from Last 12 Months

POI counts will vary over time, as a result of changes such as ingesting new data sources or changes in our duplication model. For further details, check out the Release Notes.

We use POI metadata to track store openings and closings, and below are counts of brands with at least 1 opened or closed POI in the month.

It can take more than a month to infer open/close dates, so we report brand open/close metrics on a one month delay. Learn more about our open/close columns here.

Some POI, such as airports or shopping malls, encompass smaller POI within their borders, where the larger, containing POI is referred to as the "parent" and the smaller POI is referred to as the "child". This relationship is denoted by setting the parent_placekey of the child POI equal to the placekey of the parent POI. Learn more about our hierarchy logic here.

The table below provides counts and fill rates across Core & Geometry columns for all POIs and open only POIs. Toggle through the tabs to navigate by country, and note that Geometry columns are not provided for closed POIs.

Top 10 Brands by Country and NAICS code

To categorize the key function of places, SafeGraph uses the NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) categorization, which consists of a numeric NAICS code up to 6 digits in length. The NAICS codes are hierarchical and have associated descriptions, see Core Places for more information.

The statistics below only include US Patterns, however Canada Weekly Patterns will be included following the May 2021 release.

A visit is counted if a mobile device in our panel dwells for at least 4 minutes at a given POI. Learn more about how we handle visits to enclosed POIs and other special cases here.

Visit counts are influenced by the geographic biases in our dataset and changes in the panel size over time. Each monthly delivery of Patterns includes the Panel Overview Data to enable normalization.

Median devices seen daily is calculated from total devices seen in the normalization statistics file provided with each month's release.
